The fees-free website has said I am eligible to apply for fees free study. Can I pick up where I left off in the qualification I was studying prior to 2018, or do I need to enrol in a completely new qualification to access fees-frees study?
If you are eligible for fees free at the beginning of 2018, any courses you undertake after 1 January would be eligible for fees free subject to the TEC cap for time and maximum allowance. You would not have to enrol in a new qualification for this.
How do I apply for fees-free study?
Choose the programme you wish to apply to study with Open Polytechnic, and apply online. During the application process you’ll be asked how you would like to pay for your study. Choose the ‘Government Fees-Free’ option. We will then check to make sure you are eligible and get back to you.
I think I might qualify for fees-free for 2018, but have already paid the Open Polytechnic course fees, what do I do?
If you have already paid for your study in 2018, but are eligible for fees-free study, don’t worry, we are currently looking back over all study applications and will be refunding eligible students.
What do I do if I find I am eligible for fees free, but I have already taken out a student loan for my fees for 2018?
StudyLink advises that you:
- Log in to your MyStudyLink account and change the ‘Pay fees’ field in your loan application to ‘No’ (Note: don’t cancel your loan application completely if you will still need other support from the loan like the living costs and course-related costs)
- If you were only taking out a loan to pay your fees, and your fees are less than or equal to $12,000, you may choose to cancel your loan application. Call StudyLink on 0800 88 99 00 to talk about cancelling your application.
