The Open Polytechnic is no longer able to accept new enrolments for this programme.

New students who are seeking to obtain skills and knowledge in soil composition, structure and texture, plant processes and plant propagation are advised to apply to enrol in OP3306 Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Management of Plants and Soils. This programme is offered fees-free.

This certificate is an achievement award that does not directly lead to a New Zealand qualification however tertiary providers may credit the components after reviewing and mapping the content assessed against course/s within a formal qualification. The Open Polytechnic recognises completion of OP3306 as being equivalent to completing the HOR300 and HOR301 towards NZ2677 New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3).

Current Students

If you have been previously enrolled in NZ2677 New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3) with the Open Polytechnic you can continue to select the remaining courses required to complete the qualification.

The New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) Level 3 is the first of a new generation of horticulture courses that can help you grow food for the family, design a garden you will be proud of  or set you on a pathway to careers in the horticulture sectors. This is the qualification perfectly designed whether you simply enjoy gardening, are already working in the industry or seeking a horticulture role, this certificate is sure to grow your knowledge and skills. 

Once you have successfully completed this programme, you can apply to receive the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3). You’ll also be able to move into further education and training in horticulture and put the skills you’ve learnt into practice.


You will learn about

  • growing plants from seeds and cuttings
  • how plants function
  • soils and fertilisers
  • how to select and prune trees and shrubs
  • how to identify weeds, pests and diseases
  • how to select the right plant for different environments

Workshop option

We offer tutor-led, New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3) fee free Workshops which are available in most areas. To enrol in the workshops, please follow same process as you would for the distance learning option. Once enrolled you’ll be able to see the schedule and location of workshops.

To complete this programme you will need access to a garden or a horticultural or agricultural area. You will also need access to a computer as the programme is delivered online.

Key dates

Our open courses are open for enrolment every month. Each open course starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You must complete your study within the given start and end dates.
