This programme will introduce you to the principles and practices associated with successfully managing electronic and paper-based business information from the time it is created to the time it is destroyed or becomes an archive. There is a growing need for qualified records managers as employers realise the need to access and manage business records for as long as they are legally required to do so. This is an interesting and challenging area to work in, where graduates help to manage the evidence that contributes to the accountability of New Zealand business.

What you will learn

When you achieve this qualification you will be able to:

  • think critically about the management of business records and information in any format, and outline
    possible solutions
  • explain how national and international records and information management theories, methodologies and guidelines can be applied in the workplace
  • create, organise, destroy or archive electronic and paper records in legal and accountable ways that also take into consideration the unique nature of each organisation
  • develop systems, processes, guidelines and tools that help users find, use and manage information within a
    business environment
  • explain the value and use of metadata to enhance user access to information and also document information use for administrative, accountability and legislative purposes
  • review and analyse different forms of information use within and across an organisation
  • work with other information management professionals to plan for and provide professional and ethical information management guidance and solutions within a rapidly changing industry
  • demonstrate awareness of a range of current and future issues that impact on the day-to-day management of business information.

Depending on which Level 5 option you choose, you will either gain specialist knowledge in archival management and issues, or an understanding of the basic principles and procedures used to develop, implement, operate and test systems in the information technology environment.

Career opportunities

This qualification will prepare you for a career as a records administrator or manager, or an information support officer. You may also be able to use your knowledge to advance your career in archives management.
