Understanding Young Children's Learning and Development

This course introduces students to socio-cultural theories of how young children learn and develop, including the importance of attachment and transitions. Students will also explore Te Whariki, the bi-cultural early childhood curriculum in more depth and the value of children’s play, including the role of the adult in supporting meaningful play experiences for children from conception to six (6) years of age.

In addition, students will learn about socio-cultural assessment approaches to inform their planning and practice as kaiako in early childhood settings.  Students will be required to apply these requirements and concepts in their professional practice with young children.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of how key socio-cultural theories of young children’s learning and development influence early childhood practice, with reference to ako and neuroscience beginning at conception.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the bicultural early childhood curriculum framework, Te Whāriki, and narrative assessment approaches for young children’s learning.
  • Use knowledge of social diversity, including Māori perspectives and Pacific approaches, to provide inclusive learning opportunities for infants, toddlers and young children.
  • Discuss the value of play and the role of the adult in fostering the learning of infants, toddlers and young children.
  • Observe, plan and provide and review enriching learning opportunities for an infant, toddler and young child.
  • Use te reo Maori me ona tikanga.
