The course prepares ākonga with the knowledge skills and dispositions to be culturally capable kaiako who meet the Teaching Standards (in a supported environment) and the expectations in Our Code Our Standards through in-depth knowledge of, and critical engagement with, these standards. Ākonga examine their identity as a learner and reflective practitioner and a kaiako and begin to develop a philosophy to guide their practice.

This online course introduces ākonga to ethical considerations and standards that govern the teaching profession. The course develops ākonga abilities to assess information from a range of sources, undertake research, and write formally as required by a teacher. There will be an emphasis on locating and using resources in the local community.

This course explores kaupapa Māori theory and how colonialism has impacted education and other outcomes for Māori, and why education inequalities need to be urgently addressed. Ākonga will critically examine past and current policies and legislation specific to ākonga Māori and make recommendations to bring about change and strengthen ākonga Māori educational achievement. Ākonga will strengthen their skills and knowledge of te reo Māori for use in education settings.

The purpose of this online course is for learners to apply knowledge of advanced care and support practice for people with complex needs in a health or wellbeing setting.

This course provides ākonga the opportunity to identify and describe standards and legislation relevant to their role within the disability support sector. They will reflect on workplace practices, policies, and procedures, how these are linked to identified documents, and contribute to best practice. Ākonga will describe how they implement tools and strategies in their role within a wrap-around team. They will discuss how the team uses a person-centred approach with tangata whaikaha to overcome challenges.

This course provides ākonga the opportunity to describe community integration and gain an in-depth understanding of the services and resources that are available within their community to support their work. Ākonga will be able to identify and apply workplace risk management tools and strategies. Risk management tools and strategies are linked to the organisation’s workplace policies and procedures. This course explores ethical practice within the health and wellbeing setting, specifically focussed on the disability sector.
