If you’re interested in solving real-world problems through the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure and want to work in a technician-level role in civil engineering then this programme is for you.

The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil Engineering) will provide you with the practical, technical, and analytical skills to work as an Engineering Technician, supporting the design and delivery of projects in transport, water, and geotechnical engineering. 
You’ll gain a strong foundation in civil engineering principles while applying knowledge to real scenarios in local and national contexts.

This qualification is nationally and internationally recognised, industry-aligned, and developed under the Dublin Accord to ensure it meets international standards for engineering technicians. 

What you’ll learn 

When you achieve this qualification you  will be able to: 

  • Apply civil engineering theory to practical, well-defined problems
  • Use engineering tools, software, and standards to support the design and construction of infrastructure
  • Collaborate within engineering teams to solve technical problems
  • Carry out work safely and ethically, considering health, environmental, and regulatory frameworks such as the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Resource Management Act, and the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Communicate clearly through technical reports, drawings, and documentation 
    Identify and manage risk in civil engineering contexts 

Practical component 

Most courses are delivered fully online, but selected courses will require in-person laboratory or practical sessions. These may run 1–3 days, with details provided at the start of the course. This may require travel to a provider outside your region which you will be responsible for covering the cost of you travel and accommodation.

Maximum programme completion time  

To be awarded the qualification, the programme must be completed in no more than 10 years of first enrolment, unless there are exceptional circumstances. 

Full-time and part-time study options

Enrolment in this programme can be full-time or part-time. If you are studying fulltime you can enrol in a  maximum of  four (4) courses per course offering.

If you are studying part time you can enol in a maximum two (2) courses per course offering. Part time study  does not meet the StudyLink requirements.
