This online course prepares ākonga with the knowledge skills and dispositions to be culturally capable kaiako who meet the Teaching Standards (in a supported environment) and the expectations in Our Code Our Standards through in-depth knowledge of, and critical engagement with, these standards. Ākonga examine their identity as a learner and reflective practitioner and a kaiako and begin to develop a philosophy to guide their practice.

Ākonga engage with debates and theories of human development and cultural understandings of learning, progress, development and achievement. In this course ākonga consider how diverse identities, including gender and sexuality, cultures and languages influence teaching and learning for tamariki/rangatahi. Particular attention is given to Pacific because of Aotearoa’s place in the Pacific and relationships with Pacific nations.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Critically respond to Our Code Our Standards to outline how identity and past experience influence understanding of learning and teaching.
  • Enhance knowledge of Pacific to help improve experiences for all Pacific in New Zealand
  • Examine the role of teachers in challenging bias and racism to uphold the mana of all learners.
