What you will learn

When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:

  • identify and describe basic aspects of counselling practice: engagement, counsellor-client relationship, counselling process
  • identify and describe a range of valuable micro-skills in counselling
  • access information in relation to a range of local counselling and support agencies
  • identify issues related to supervision and referral
  • understand and apply a range of theories in relation to counselling, especially goals, concepts, techniques and theories of personality
  • demonstrate an understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi in relation to counselling and psychology in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • provide an overview of a bicultural models and theoretical application.
  • discuss issues related to counselling in the wider context of a multicultural environment.
