They learn how to apply research and inquiry methodologies to improve practice in collaboration with their learning community. Ākonga are taught skills to critique a range of published research to assist them to improve their practice.
In this course ākonga investigate and critically examine a range of issues that influences the learning and development of infants, toddlers and young children. Ākonga will critically evaluate and reflect on theories of learning and development from post-structural, critical and cultural perspectives and consider the implications for the education and care of infants, toddlers and young children. They will also consider the significance of the early years on future lifespan development.
This course introduces students to the early childhood regulatory framework, including the Aotearoa New Zealand bicultural curriculum framework Te Whāriki (2017). Study it by distance while you work with Open Polytechnic, NZ's leader in online and distance learning.
This course introduces students to socio-cultural theories of how young children learn and develop, including the importance of attachment and transitions. Students will also explore Te Whariki, the bi-cultural early childhood curriculum in more depth and the value of children’s play, including the role of the adult in supporting meaningful play experiences for children from conception to six (6) years of age.

This course introduces ākonga to the profession of early childhood teaching. The past and present provision of different early childhood services in Aotearoa New Zealand are examined, with a focus on the differing philosophies, pedagogy, and politics of each service.
