This online course will introduce learners to the properties and application of a range of civil engineering materials and the fundamentals of geological and geomorphological processes.

Learners who successfully complete this online course will be able to:

  • Describe and evaluate the properties and applications of concrete in Civil Engineering.
  • Describe and evaluate the properties and applications of metals, timber and new materials in Civil Engineering.
  • Identify and describe the composition of minerals and rocks, and discuss soil and rock formation processes. 
  • Describe and evaluate earthquakes, physical and structural geology, and interpret geological maps

Assessment:

  • 50% internally assessed
  • 50% examination.

Lab Requirements

This course includes a 2 and a half day laboratory workshop, which is an essential part of this course. This may require travel to a provider outside your region which you will be responsible for covering the cost of. Your lecturer/tutor will confirm the specific dates during the first week of the course.
