On their final practicum ākonga will be expected to weave together all that they have learned to provide high-quality culturally relevant teaching within an early learning service. Ākonga will be expected to competently carry out the many roles of a kaiako and be able to make good teaching decisions in collaboration with others. A strong focus of this practicum is promoting equity and inclusion for diverse tamariki, through the incorporation of te reo Māori and tikanga-a-iwi and responsive, empowering relationships, teaching practices and curriculum decisions.

The Culminating Integrative Assessment (CIA) is undertaken simultaneously with the final practicum and provides ākonga with the opportunity to articulate their philosophy of learning and teaching as they prepare to graduate as a qualified early childhood/primary/secondary kaiako.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Consistently and intentionally incorporate te reo Māori and tikanga-a-iwi in interactions, planning, assessment and the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the kaiako team to promote culturally safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Design and adapt learning experiences and programmes that meet the strengths, interests and learning needs of tamariki and draw on the funds of knowledge that tamariki bring from their diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Manage the complexities of the teaching role, including the Key Teaching Tasks, fulfilling everyday responsibilities.
  • Articulate a comprehensive philosophy of teaching and learning which refers to all Standards for the Teaching Profession.
