We are no longer taking enrolments from new learners for OP7400 Bachelor of Social Work.
The Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) has introduced new Education Standards that provide greater flexibility in the length of social work degrees while maintaining the required graduate outcomes and professional practice standards.
In response to these changes, Open Polytechnic is planning a new Bachelor of Social Work degree that will meet the new SWRB Education Standards.
The proposed degree remains subject to internal and external approval, accreditation, and regulatory processes. Until these have been completed, we are unable to confirm a start date or when enrolments for the new degree will open.
Please check back on our website in 2027 for information on the new proposed degree or fill out our registration of interest form and we will contact you.
If you already started studying OP7400 Bachelor of Social Work, up to and including October 2026, you can continue to apply to re-enrol in your next course.
If the proposed new degree completes the required internal and external approval, accreditation and regulatory processes, and there is an opportunity for you to transition into the new degree, we will be in contact with you to discuss your options.
Please note, Open Polytechnic has a teach out plan in place, and learners who are studying OP7400 Bachelor of Social Work must complete their last course in the degree no more than 8 years from their first enrolment.
If you need assistance with a study plan, please contact us.

Taking a break from study?
If you do not enrol in the programme for two consecutive trimesters you will need to give evidence that you still meet the entry requirements before you can apply for your next course. You will need to provide recent references, complete a new police vet, and having an interview with a member of the social work team.
Your acceptance back into the degree may be provisional for the first trimester. Continued enrolment will be dependent on satisfactory progress and successful completion of the courses studied in this block. You must contact socialwork@openpolytechnic.ac.nz at least 6 weeks prior to the start date of the trimester you wish to resume study in.
