Learning and Teaching in the Early Years 2

EDU726

This course builds on ākonga understanding of high-quality early childhood teaching.
Ākonga will continue to develop their understanding of the Te Whāriki approach to learning and teaching, including assessment and planning approaches.

They will learn more about theories, curriculum and pedagogical approaches so that they can facilitate infants, toddlers and young children’s learning across all strands of the curriculum.

Ākonga will also further explore research and inquiry frameworks that enable them to investigate and critique policy and practice issues.

They will strengthen their understanding of why high-quality early childhood education is essential to improving learning and wellbeing outcomes for tamariki, in particular Māori and Pacific.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Critically analyse the significance of theories and cultural perspectives to understanding learning and development of infants, toddlers and young children.
  • Investigate ways to enact an integrated, negotiated and localised curriculum.
  • Articulate professional knowledge in relation to relevant curriculum decisions to support infants, toddlers, and young children’s learning and development and high-quality early childhood education.
  • Critically analyse assessment, planning and evaluation approaches that are consistent with Te Whāriki and its bicultural intent.
  • Critically reflect on the opportunities and challenges of being a reflective teacher-researcher.
