Inclusive Education

EDU721

The focus of this course is on the practical implications of equity, diversity and inclusion in classrooms and the school environment.

Based on whanaungatanga, ākonga continue to learn to understand who they are, who they are teaching and to understand how tamariki in their school may be learning. Ākonga will gain practical and theoretical knowledge, which focuses on inclusive education to prepare them for the diversity in classrooms and assist future planning using documents such as Tātaiako and Tapasā as guides.

A major focus will be on developing an understanding of the cognitive, affective, physical, behavioural and communication differences that exist in regular classrooms. Ākonga will learn to respond appropriately to the additional learning and behavioural needs of tamariki with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and autism spectrum disorders. They will, for a typical group of tamariki, examine a range of strategies for adapting and modifying programmes, the learning environment and how to work with parents, whānau and communities to meet the social and emotional needs of tamariki.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Review research about human development and the implications for learning, health and well-being.
  • Apply established theories of differentiation in planning, to support the learning of tamariki who would benefit from adaptations.
  • Reflect critically on inclusive education practices and consider strategies to refine further practice.
