This online course introduces ākonga to the profession of early childhood teaching. Ākonga will learn about early childhood education and develop an understanding of their professional and ethical obligations and responsibilities as a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand as outlined in Our Code, Our Standards.
Ākonga will develop understanding of the Te Whāriki approach to learning and teaching, including theories of learning and development and characteristics and patterns that can be observed in infants, toddlers and young children. They will learn about the importance of enacting curriculum that is bicultural, meaningful, enjoyable, culturally responsive and inclusive for all tamariki. Ākonga will come to understand the importance of examining their own values, beliefs, and assumptions about tamariki, whānau, learning and teaching; and evaluating and adapting their practice through reflection and inquiry.
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Identify early childhood provision and the relevant funding, regulatory, statutory, and professional frameworks and guiding documents for the early childhood education sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Discuss the knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions required for high-quality culturally relevant teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand early learning services
- Analyse Te Whāriki and its underpinning theories, approaches and pedagogies.
- Critically examine how infants, toddlers and young children learn and develop within their social and cultural contexts, including typical patterns and characteristics.
- Investigate inquiry frameworks that will challenge and / or support their own teaching practice.
