This practicum course will enable learners to emerge as competent beginning practitioners in the addiction recovery and wellbeing field. Students will build on theoretical models of recovery and wellbeing, along the DSM5 continuum for substance and non-substance use disorders and apply assessment planning and intervention skills in supervised practice with peers and clients.

Practical or work-based components

In this course learners must be supervised in a 120-hour practicum, and will be working with whaiora/clients of approved addiction services.

75 hours of this will be client-facing, the remainder can be other placement-related tasks. BHW709 will develop learners’ professional practice skills with individuals, families and whānau, their concept of professional identity and ability to work within the professional codes, legal requirements, professional values and ethics of practice.

It will build on learners’ understanding of reflective practice, Te Tiriti obligations, cultural responsiveness and the use of professional supervision.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to work in partnership with clients, their whānau, and other professionals when applying brief interventions and motivational enhancement therapy to achieve evidence of therapeutic gains with clients.
  •  Facilitate addiction and recovery focussed groups, matching client needs with evidence-informed interventions
  •  Reflect on practice through the lens of dapaanz core competencies and code of ethics.
