Log in help

Find information about the steps you need to follow to log in and set up Multi-Factor Authentication and password reset options.

This page also includes information on what to do if you forget your password or learner email, are returning to study with us after a long break, or are having trouble logging in from overseas.

Note: If you are an Open Polytechnic staff member and need help, please contact the Service Desk.

To log in you need your:

  • Learner email – for example, FirstnameLastname@myop.ac.nz (Some may include numbers)
  • password.

First time logging in?

If you are a new learner, you can find your learner email and temporary password in the ‘Username and log in details’ email we sent you when you enrolled.

The first time you log in you need to:

  1. Create a new password
  2. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which will help keep your account secure. Learn more about MFA
  3. Set up options that will let you reset your password yourself if you need to.

There are a few steps, but you only need to do them once.

Password the first time you log in

The first time you log in your temporary password will be ‘MyOP’ followed by your date of birth in ddmmyyyy format. For example, if your birthday is 28 December 1999, your password will be: MyOP28121999.

Changing your password

When you create a new password it:

  • must have 8 or more characters
  • should not include your first or last name
  • should not include any letter or number sequences (such as 1234).

Note - Some common passwords will be blocked.

If you ever need to change your password after your first log in you need to:

  1. log into My Open Polytechnic
  2. click on your name in the top right corner
  3. click 'Change my password'
  4. enter your current password, and your new password twice.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security feature that means you need to provide two or more forms of verification (authentication) to access an account or system. You must set this up to be able to access your @myop.ac.nz account. There are three options you can use for authentication:

  • Microsoft authenticator app
  • Office phone
  • Authentication phone.

Current learners and MFA

If you have already setup MFA for your @myop.ac.nz account, you don’t need to do this again.

If you have not, you need to:

  • Set up MFA the next time you log in
  • Set up options that will let you reset your password yourself if you need to.

If you need help, use the how to log in instructions linked to above from from step 4 or contact us

Set up password reset options

The first time you log in you also need to set up a way to let you reset your password yourself.  During your first log in you will be asked to choose from the following options to set this up. (See instructions below for what to do if you have previously logged in).

Authentication phone

  • You will be asked to enter your phone number then verify that number via a text or call.
  • If you ever reset your password, you will get a text to that number with unique code to enter on screen or a phone call where you need to press the ‘pound’ (#) key.

Authentication email

  • You need to enter an email address to verify.
  • If you ever need to reset your password you will get an email with a unique code to enter.

Security questions

  • Select three security questions and their answers.
  • If you ever need to reset your password, you need to answer the questions.

If you have previously logged in, but haven’t set up password reset options before:

  • Log into your @myop.ac.nz account
  • In My Open Polytechnic, click on your name on the top right to find the ‘Change my password’ link
  • On that page, click on the link under the 'Security options' heading to go to your Open Polytechnic Microsoft account
  • Follow the steps to set up your preferred option(s).

Returning learners

If you have not logged in with your @myop.ac.nz email for more than 12 months your account may have been disabled.

To get your account unlocked please contact our Service Desk team.

If you have forgotten your password, use the ‘Forgot my password’ link during the log in process. You’ll find this after you enter your @myop.ac.nz email and click Next.

If you have not set up your password reset options you cannot change your password and need to contact us to have it reset.
