Bachelor of Applied Management now available through Open Polytechnic

Recognising the growing need for effective managers who possess both technical and conceptual managerial skills, the Open Polytechnic has introduced the new Bachelor of Applied Management to its range of distance learning qualifications.

Designed to equip graduates for middle and upper management roles in a wide range of industries, the new degree is aimed at students who are already in, or aspire to be in, management positions.

The Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Applied Management aligns with government initiatives to increase the proportion of the workforce holding qualifications at Level 4 and above by providing a route to a Level 7 qualification.

Delivered by distance, the degree will provide an alternate and flexible path for students wanting a more practical and applied approach for gaining a management qualification.

“This is a very flexible degree.  The traditional business disciplines of law, economics, statistics, communication and computing are studied as integrated papers.  Students are able to select courses in management, human resources, leadership and marketing according to their own interests and needs,” says Jane Needham, Head of the School of  Business at Open Polytechnic.

“There is a growing need for managers who can define business objectives, allocate resources effectively, motivate employees or solve problems when they arise. A graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Management will be a well-rounded and adaptable manager with a sound knowledge of the range of procedures used to ensure that a business maximises its performance,” she says.

Students will undertake a work based practicum paper in their final year and this will enable them to use the learning’s in a practical real life environment

The new qualification also meets the requirements of students to transition from applied diplomas (or equivalent experience) to the undergraduate degree and prepares students for on-going postgraduate study either through enrolment onto an MBA or a number of graduate diplomas offered by the Polytechnic and other institutes.

The Open Polytechnic is currently accepting applications from potential students for the Bachelor of Applied Management with the first courses starting in February.

The Open Polytechnic is New Zealand’s specialist provider of distance learning and one of the largest polytechnics in the country. Each year the Open Polytechnic enrols around 34,000 mainly adult learners who are fitting their studies in around work and other commitments to upskill themselves for current or future careers.
