You will examine historical, cultural and social attitudes on disability and disabled people.

Issues relating to social attitude, stigma and labelling, integration and social roles will be covered.

The course will require you to examine how disability as a social process affects the person, their whānau/significant others, and the community.

You will examine your own attitudes to disabled people, explore how personal and societal attitudes are formed, and how they can be challenged and changed.

Students who successfully complete this online course will be able to:

  • Explain how historical and cultural attitudes and ideologies have influenced contemporary understandings of disability as a social process, and disabled people.
  • Reflect on how personal perceptions and attitudes in relation to disability and disabled people are formed and impact on themselves and the lived experience of disability.
  • Compare and contrast the diverse voices and stories of disabled people and their families/whanau and explain the importance of these narratives in relation to human rights and social change.
