This course builds on the language learning principles. In this course ākonga are introduced to the Learning Languages curriculum area and second language learning principles. A communicative approach to second language acquisition is explored with a focus on sociolinguistic competence.

Learners will explore the core communication strand where tamariki use the language to make meaning, integrating this with extending linguistic and cultural knowledge related to the language. Ākonga explore ways to support tamariki language knowledge, how speakers adjust their language when negotiating meaning in different contexts and for different purposes. Ākonga explore how to engage tamariki in understanding the interrelationship between culture and language.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Discuss the interrelationship between identity, language and culture.
  • Analyse how the principles of second language acquisition can be used in a range of contexts
  • Plan learning opportunities to promote the knowledge of tamariki of a specific language.
