Ākonga undertaking this course explore the content of the four strands of the Health and Physical Education curriculum area of the New Zealand Curriculum. A key focus is the seven key areas of learning in this curriculum area: mental health, sexuality education, food and nutrition, body care and physical safety, physical activity, sports studies and outdoor education.

Ākonga develop an understanding of the pedagogy of Health and Physical Education. To promote equity, they explore a range of learning environments and differentiated learning programmes to address the cultural, social, emotional and physical needs of all tamariki. Specifically, they explore wellbeing from different cultural perspective. 

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Discuss how relevant curricula, syllabus documents and resources support teaching physical education, health and wellbeing, including cultural wellbeing viewed from a range of cultural perspectives.
  • Design effective learning experiences in health and physical education for tamariki wellbeing.
  • Design effective learning experiences in health and physical education for tamariki physical development.

This course is 100% internally assessed.
