Ākonga will develop their understanding of literacy within Te Whāriki and the New Zealand Curriculum and learn to use a range of evidence-based practices to effectively support literacy learning of young tamariki. Child development theory underpins these practices. A focus will be on enabling ākonga to provide a connected, seamless learning experience for tamariki across the early years including those tamariki who have English as an Additional Language (EAL) prioritising oral language, discussion and inquiry to promote learning.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Discuss theoretical models and approaches to literacy and language learning in relation to young tamariki and Te Whāriki, the New Zealand Curriculum and other relevant government documents.
  • Discuss how tamariki develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes about early literacy through play and thoughtful and intentional pedagogy, including tamariki who have English as an additional language.
