Ākonga will have an opportunity to reflect on the inequities that prevent children from accessing and receiving high-quality culturally relevant early childhood education and on the role of teachers as change agents.

The concepts of equity and advocacy are introduced in relation to the rights of the child as articulated in United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC).

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Examine a range of sociological concepts in relation to inclusion and exclusion in early childhood education in order to support successful learning for all tamariki.
  • Reflect on the impact their own values and beliefs about difference and diversity might have on relationships, teaching and learning in early learning services.
  • Discuss the responsibilities of the early childhood Kaiako in promoting inclusion for all children through culturally responsive practice, collaboration with parents, whānau, community, and inclusive pedagogies.
