This course introduces ākonga to the profession of early childhood teaching. The past and present provision of different early childhood services in Aotearoa New Zealand are examined, with a focus on the differing philosophies, pedagogy, and politics of each service.

This course includes a compulsory workshop.
Ākonga will explore mana-motuhake/self-concept with opportunities to examine their own values, beliefs, and assumptions about tamariki, whānau, learning and teaching. Ākonga will also develop an understanding of their professional and ethical obligations and responsibilities as a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand with a focus on the regulations related to safety of tamariki, including cyber safety.
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Discuss differing philosophies, pedagogies, and histories of a range of early childhood service types in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Discuss the relevant funding, regulatory, statutory, curriculum and professional framework for the early childhood education sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Reflect on the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and dispositions required for high-quality culturally relevant teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand early learning services.
