The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand today confirmed that the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Board has approved the transfer of Tai Poutini Polytechnic to Open Polytechnic from 1 January 2027. The Board approved the transition plan on 21 October 2026.

Following this approval, Open Polytechnic has appointed Jo Field as Head of Regional Operations, Te Tai o Poutini. Ms Field will take up the role on 5 January 2027.

In a letter dated 23 October 2026, TEC Chief Executive Tim Fowler acknowledged approval of the transition plan as an important milestone and reaffirmed TEC’s commitment to supporting the successful transfer and continuity of vocational education for learners and communities on the West Coast.

Ms Field is currently Group Manager, Office of the Chief Executive at West Coast Regional Council and is based in Greymouth.

“Ms Field brings extensive experience in operational and people leadership, including senior roles with the Department of Conservation and Ministry of Social Development,” says Open Polytechnic Chief Executive Sharon Cooke.

“We are pleased to confirm this important appointment and look forward to working with Ms Field as we begin this next chapter for vocational education in Te Tai o Poutini.”

From January 2027 Tai Poutini will operate as a regional campus within Open Polytechnic, combining local, face-to-face learning with Open Polytechnic’s national online and blended delivery capability.

Open Polytechnic will also establish a regional advisory board, bringing together industry, iwi and other key regional stakeholders to help shape the future direction of vocational education in the West Coast region.
