Generative Artificial Intelligence in courseware and assessment development statement
Open Polytechnic uses Generative Artificial Intelligence to support courseware development.
Generative Artificial Intelligence is used by our learning designers, subject matter experts and planners in accordance with documented practice. All output is subject to review by learning designers and subject matter expert peers, whose credentials are, and always will be, appropriate to the subject and level we design to.
Direct quotations from Generative Artificial Intelligence sources are always referenced however re-phrasing is not.
Our materials are reviewed by multiple experts (whose workflow does not involve Generative Artificial Intelligence) before being published for ākonga use. We stand by the expertise represented in our courseware and its suitability for the Aotearoa New Zealand context and ensure an appropriate level of human oversight and accountability of AI systems, their outputs, and recognition of the unique values of Te Ao Māori.
Any AI associated with translating Te Reo Māori or multimedia generation has the result confirmed by an agent approved by our Te Kura Wānanga. Any mātauranga Māori used to train Open Polytechnic’s Generative AI (for example, te reo Māori, images, and pūrākau) embedded from within our courseware is done with permission from the traditional knowledge holder/author. We do not use prompts or other ontology to generate mātauranga Māori.
Knowledge that is considered tapu in te ao Māori is never used with a Generative AI. Tapu knowledge includes but is not limited to:
- Photos of the deceased, marae, carvings.
- Whakapapa of individuals or collectives including pūrākau, waiata and whāikōrero.
- Any data that is deemed tapu by the kaitiaki of the content of the data.
Any dispute of plagiarism will be assessed by an independent expert and/or kaitiaki of the topic.
