Admission requirements

We can accept international students who are in New Zealand on a valid work permit to study part time.

If your study is a requirement of your employment – we require a letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. If the study is not a requirement of your employment a variation of conditions is required.

Section 16(5) of the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 also requires the Open Polytechnic to ensure international students have appropriate insurance in place to cover medical care. We will require evidence of your insurance cover. However, if your work visa covers a period of more than two years, this is not required.

We do not accept international students on a visitor visa or student visa. If you are an international student living in New Zealand, you must provide verified evidence of your right to study in New Zealand with your application for enrolment.

Workshops

Some courses include face-to-face workshops.

Any travel and accommodation costs associated with workshops is outside the fees charged by Open Polytechnic and is at the student’s own expense.

If the workshop is outside the region the student resides in, please check with local travel providers to find out travel costs.

Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016

How to make a complaint

As an international student, if you have a complaint or concern it is important that you go through the right steps.

Open Polytechnic has a complaints and concerns process which you can find here:

Complaints, disputes and concerns

Follow this process first, as we would like to work with you to resolve your complaint or concern.

If your complaint or concern cannot be resolved by us, then as an international student, you can contact NZQA.  NZQA is a government organisation who can provide an independent assessment of your complaint and will provide advice to you.  You can submit your complaint query on the NZQA website, or send an email to qadrisk@nzqa.govt.nz
