Certificate in Advanced Sterilising Technology (Level 5)


Qualification code OP5171

This programme builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the Open Polytechnic Certificate in Sterilising Technology (Level 3). Recognised by the New Zealand Sterile Services Association (NZSSA), you’ll benefit from studying this programme if you are a leader of a service or a senior technician who is involved in or responsible for the reprocessing of re-usable medical devices. You will gain advanced sterilising knowledge and the skills to use quality management processes, leadership, training and verification of others providing sterilising services.

New Students

OP5171 Certificate in Advanced Sterilising Technology (Level 5) will close to new student enrolments on 3 December 2018.
If you wish to enrol in this programme, please apply to enrol by 3 December 2018. Open Polytechnic will not be taking any new student enrolments in this programme after this date.
Please note, to be awarded this qualification you will need to have successfully completed all 3 courses that make up the programme by 30 June 2020. If you need help with a study plan to complete the certificate in this timeframe, please email us.

Current Students

If you were already enrolled in OP5171 Certificate in Advanced Sterilising Technology (Level 5) prior to 3 December 2018, you can continue to enrol in your next course as normal to complete your qualification.
Please note you must be enrolled in your last course by 4 November 2019 and successfully complete all 3 courses by 30 June 2020 to be awarded the qualification. If you need help with a study plan to complete your certificate in this timeframe, please email us.

What you will learn

When you achieve this qualification you will be able to:

  • access current information related to sterilising technology
  • discuss issues related to effective decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments
  • demonstrate practices that ensure the achievement and maintenance of sterility
  • apply validation requirements for cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of instruments and equipment
  • provide leadership for a team and train and verify the work of people providing sterile services
  • apply standards, legislation and quality management methods for continuous improvement in sterile services.

This qualification will prepare you for a career leading a sterilising technology team in a health service organisation or office-based environment.

Our open courses are open for enrolment every month. Each open course starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You must complete your study within the given start and end dates.

Assessment and exam

There are three assessments per course. A pass will be awarded to students who gain a minimum of 50% of the available marks overall and not less than 40% in any individual assessment item.

Assessment tasks include written answers supported by evidence and also included verification in the form of signed learner feedback sheets and or observer/manager verification.

Assessments are submitted electronically.
