If you’re working in a library or information management position and would like to update your cataloguing skills, this is the right qualification for you. You will learn about the guidelines and standards used in cataloguing and classification, (including RDA: Resource Description and Access, Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings), contemporary issues affecting cataloguing, catalogue management, library technical services and the basic principles relating to information systems.

What you will learn

When you achieve this qualification you will be able to:

  • analyse resources likely to be acquired by libraries to enable appropriate descriptive and subject cataloguing to be done
  • apply RDA: Resource Description and Access to create descriptive catalogue records for a range of formats
  • assign MARC codes and tags to descriptive
    catalogue records
  • use Dewey Decimal Classification scheme to provide accurate classification numbers
  • use Library of Congress Subject Headings to provide accurate subject headings
  • demonstrate awareness of contemporary issues and show how they affect cataloguing policies and operations. 

Career opportunities

This qualification will prepare you for work as a cataloguing librarian in libraries of all types. It is also appropriate if you’re employed as a sole charge librarian within a school or special library and you need to do your own cataloguing.
