Around seven hours study and at least five hours work in a primary or intermediate school per week.

This programme is is closed for enrolments for new students and has been replaced with the New Zealand Certificate in Education Support (Level 4).
If you were already enrolled this programme before 26 September 2018 you can continue to enrol in your next course to complete your qualification.
You must be enrolled in your last course/s by the April block in 2019. You need to successfully complete all of your assessments by 31 December 2019 to be awarded this qualification.

About this programme
As part of the programme you will volunteer or work in a school for at least five hours per week.
You will be responsible for assisting teachers by helping pupils with their learning programme and other needs. If you’re currently working as a teacher aide, this programme is a great way to gain formal recognition and new skills that you can apply straight to your job.
What you will learn
Once you have achieved this qualification you will know about:
- assisting children with their learning
- working with groups of learners
- planning small group learning sessions
- children’s development
- providing a safe environment for children.
This qualification will prepare you for a career in teacher aiding or supporting special education learners.
You may also be interested in our early childhood education or out of school care and recreation qualifications. The Out of School Care and Recreation Certificate is designed for people who are working in before or after school care or holiday programmes.
Upgrades and cross credits
If you have completed OP3500 Teacher Aide Certificate, you can upgrade to OP4100 Certificate in Teacher Aiding. Twenty credits from OP3500 will be transferred to this programme. To achieve this qualification, you need to complete 4972 Working Professionally and three other elective courses. You do not need to complete 4971 Introduction to Teacher Aiding.
If you have completed the Out of School Care and Recreation Certificate, you may be able to credit 4291 The Extension to Out of School Care and Recreation towards the Certificate in Teacher Aiding.
