If you started studying this programme with Open Polytechnic prior to 23 June 2017 you can continue to enrol in this qualification.  Please note you must successfully complete all required courses by the 31st July, 2019.  Please note, Open Polytechnic will not be able to award this qualification after this date.  If you need any help planning your study contact us.

About this programme

Turn your small business idea into a reality with the skills you learn from the NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management. This programme will help you work out if starting a small business is right for you, and if you’ve already started, you’ll learn valuable skills that you can apply straight to your business. This qualification is offered in conjunction with the Institute of Management New Zealand (IMNZ) who promote excellence in management. IMNZ qualifications are also recognised in
other countries.

What you will learn

You will learn about the process of scoping and evaluating your small business proposition, how to manage your start-up and first year of operation and planning for future development. Depending on the elective courses you choose you may also learn how to find and keep your market niche, look after your cash flow and profitability, how to identify and manage your costs and employ and manage staff. 

Career opportunities

You will gain the skills necessary to start your own small business.

 

Key dates

Our open courses are open for enrolment every month. Each open course starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You must complete your study within the given start and end dates.

Assessment and exam

Each course or unit standard is sent to you as a package of learning materials, along with an assessment paper. Depending on the course, the assessment may be a question and answer workbook or a project, and you might need to send in specimens or photographs. Your tutor will give you feedback on your answers, and if you have weaknesses in some areas, they will help you.  

When your enrolment is confirmed you will be able to log in to My Open Polytechnic to view the assessment due dates. You must submit your assignments by these due dates.
