Overview

You’ll study 2 core courses and 3 specialised courses in the Companion Animal strand. As a graduate you will have the skills to work in a range of organisations associated with the care of companion animals.

For students completing the programme in the Companion Animals context, the programme includes learning and assessment of general skills and knowledge relating to the care and handling of a minimum of three species commonly kept as domestic pets or assistance animals. Animals focused on in the programme include cats, dogs, birds and domestic poultry (backyard chickens) and rabbits and rodents.

  • Comply with all regulatory requirements and relevant industry codes of practice for animal care
  • Respond to normal and abnormal health and behaviour in animals
  • Assist with the day-to-day care of animals.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will have the skills, knowledge, and attributes to be employed in a range of workplaces associated with the care of companion animals. This may include people working as assistants in pet stores, animal rescue centres, pet grooming, animal day care, greyhound racing kennels, animal breeders, animal training, or boarding facilities.
