Programme Update

New Students

The Open Polytechnic is no longer able to accept new enrolments for this programme.

New students who are seeking to obtain skills and knowledge in soil composition, structure and texture, plant processes and plant propagation are advised to apply to enrol in OP3306 Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Management of Plants and Soils. This programme is offered fees-free.

This certificate is an achievement award that does not directly lead to a New Zealand qualification however tertiary providers may credit the components after reviewing and mapping the content assessed against course/s within a formal qualification. The Open Polytechnic recognises completion of OP3306 as being equivalent to completing the HOR300 and HOR301 towards NZ2677 New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3).

Current Students

If you were already enrolled in this programme prior to 22 May 2017 you can continue to enrol in your remaining courses.  

A reminder that the last date to meet the requirements of this qualification is 31 December 2019. This means that you must have all of your assessment results in before 31 December 2019. 

We encourage you to complete as soon as possible to be awarded the National Certificate.


Gardens and horticultural areas will flourish in your care with the skills you learn from the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3. Whether you enjoy gardening, are already working in the industry or seeking a horticulture role, this certificate is sure to grow your knowledge and skills

You will learn about:

  • growing plants from seeds and cuttings

  • soils and fertilisers

  • how to plant and prune trees and shrubs

  • how to identify weeds, pests and diseases

There are also a range of optional courses that you can choose to match your interests.

The elective unit standards offered in this certificate will give you the flexibility to tailor your learning to suit your job interests.

Once you have successfully completed this qualification, you can apply to receive the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3. You’ll also be able to move into further education and training in horticulture and put the skills you’ve learnt into practice.

To complete this qualification you will need access to a garden or a horticultural or agricultural area.

Career Opportunities

Following completion of NC1471 National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) with Open Polytechnic you could seek employment at an entry level in the horticulture industry.

Compulsory Literacy Assessment

Before we can enrol you into NC1471 National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) you will need to complete a compulsory literacy and numeracy assessment.

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has created the assessment tool to measure and improve the literacy and numeracy skills of adult learners in New Zealand.

When your enrolment is received you will receive an email with your password and a link to the assessment on the TEC website. When you have finished the assessment you will see a visual report with your results. There is no pass or fail for the assessment and the result will not affect your enrolment in the programme.

Your tutor will use your results to find out what support you may need.
