Leadership is explained in terms of theory, styles and practical skills, having relevance for information professionals at all levels.

It considers ethical and legal frameworks, organisational behaviour and culture, and supporting and working with people. The course also addresses change management, professional development, and the skills needed in advocacy and community engagement focussing on diverse staff, services, organisations and communities including iwi and Māori, and Pasifika community groups. Finally, the course considers the application of competencies for community engagement and collaboration, stakeholder communication and managing partnerships.

What you will learn

When you successfully complete this online course you will be able to:

  • Explain the theory and evaluate the practice of leadership in organisations and professions using a range of techniques and skills.
  • Develop strategies for working effectively with people, taking into account different ethical, legal, organisational, cultural and diversity considerations and contexts.
  • Develop advocacy techniques that recognise and support staff diversity, services, organisations and communities including iwi and Māori community groups.
  • Appraise and select competencies needed for community engagement and collaboration at a strategic level for specific situations, including communication and negotiation with stakeholders and partnerships.
