This course is designed to build your skills and confidence in a number of areas that are required for successful participation in our society. Whānau and communities will benefit from people with the confidence, skills, knowledge, and attributes needed to progress to further and more focused learning, and to participate in their communities.

The main purpose of this course is to develop your communication and employment skills so that you can participate fully in the workforce and in your community. Specifically, this course will build your skills and confidence in the following areas:

  • Workplace skills including care and timeliness, requirements and expectations of employees, assertive communication and diversity
  • Hui and roles associated with hui and tikanga (the Māori way of doing things)
  • Be assertive in a range of situations

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to

  • Describe care and timeliness as an employee
  • Describe requirements and expectations faced by employees within the workplace
  • Be assertive in a range of specified situations
  • Actively participate in spoken interactions 
  • Describe a hui and the roles associated with hui in accordance with tikanga and/or kawa
