In this course students are introduced to the diversity of families and family/whānau structures and early childhood services in Aotearoa New Zealand and techniques for effective communication with diverse groups of people. Strategies for developing positive and reciprocal relationships with young children are explored as well as personal, professional behaviours of an educator, including ethical responsibilities.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to
- Demonstrate understanding of whānau/ family diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand and strategies for effective communication with diverse peoples.
- Use and evaluate strategies for developing positive, reciprocal, relationships with children, including to guide children’s social competence and behaviour.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical responsibilities and behaviours of an early childhood educator in relation to own values and beliefs.
- Implement and reflect on strategies for managing personal health and wellbeing.
- Describe and compare a range of early childhood services and philosophies in Aotearoa NZ.
