Fire Dynamics

This online fire dynamics course will help you develop a thorough understanding of the scientific principles of combustion and the methods of extinguishment.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to

  • Examine the principles of combustion and fire development
  • Debate and summarise the factors involved in the extinction of fire
  • Evaluate and explain the principles of heat transfer and spread of fire
  • Compare and contrast the process of smoke generation and development within a compartment
  • Predict fire development and smoke filling in a simple volume

Assessment

Assessment for this course is:

  • 20% Practical lab
  • 30% Tests
  • 50% Examination.

Labs requirements

A 3 day practical Laboratory held in either Christchurch or Rotorua  is a requirement for this course.

Your lecturer/tutor will confirm the actual dates (and further requirements) within the first week of the trimester. It is recommended that you keep this in mind as it is a compulsory laboratory.
