This course provides you with opportunities to develop the professional knowledge, skills and dispositions required to work in a range of early childhood services and settings. This practicum prepares you to meet the Graduating Teacher Standards (Education Council NZ) through in depth knowledge of, and critical engagement with, these standards. A focus of this final practicum is the concept of leadership in early childhood education and what this means for the teacher as an advocate for young children from diverse family backgrounds and communities.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Practice

  • Demonstrate personal and professional qualities outlined in the Graduating Teaching Standards: Aotearoa New Zealand and knowledge of the Registered Teacher Criteria
  • Demonstrate elements of leadership within an early childhood teaching team including sharing knowledge with colleagues
  • Critically analyse own teaching practice in light of ethical considerations and statutory requirements for professional practice
  • Apply a critical understanding to the role of teacher as advocate for children and families within the early childhood setting
  • Demonstrate in practice an in depth understanding of equity and diversity

Pedagogy

  • Articulate a professional identity that reflects a commitment to social justice, advocacy, sustainability and Te Tiriti ō Waitangi
  • Discuss the complexity of management, leadership and administration requirements and how these influence quality assurance systems in early childhood settings
  • Develop a professional development plan to ensure continual learning and improvement as an early childhood teacher, leading to and beyond teacher registration.
