In this course you will examine the contextualised nature of learning and development and the socio-political contexts in which key theories foundational to early childhood education were formed. You will also learn to analyse the impact of differing abilities, home situations, socio-economic backgrounds, and linguistic and cultural diversities on young children’s enculturation. There is a focus on teaching strategies and approaches to support children’s home languages and cultures in multi-cultural early childhood settings.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to

  • Examine and critique the historical, cultural, social and political contexts in which key development theories informing early childhood education were formed 
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of socio-cultural approaches and concepts in relation to the learning, socialisation and enculturation of young children
  • Discuss in depth theoretical approaches and strategies for working with children with differing abilities and from a range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of language acquisition including the maintenance of cultural heritages
  • Discuss in depth the role of family, culture and community in early language acquisition and the implications of linguistic and cultural diversity for early childhood education.
