Studying online with Open Polytechnic allows you to access your course resources, submit your assignments, check your student account information, and access your student Office 365 account which includes your student email account and online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
The following frequently asked questions will help you learn more about how to use the online study tools at Open Polytechnic.

We recommend you use Google Chrome for your online studies with Open Polytechnic.
a. Click on the log in button on the top right of the Open Polytechnic website
b. Enter your log in details.
Username: Your student id number followed by a lower case ‘s’ i.e. 1234567s
Password: If it’s your first time logging in, use your date of birth in this format ddmmyyyy (you’ll be asked to change this). Otherwise use your existing password.
c. Once you’ve filled in your username and password, click ‘log in’.
d. You will then be taken to ‘My Open Polytechnic’ where you will see your course/s under the ‘My courses’ box on the left hand side of the screen. Click on the course name.
e. A second log in screen will appear, please re-enter your password again and click on log in. You will then be taken to your course page.
The first time you log in to your course you will be taken to the course dashboard page. Click on ‘Go to course home’
This will open up your course page. If this the first time you have logged in, you will see a button on the right which says ‘Start course’ click on this button to begin your course. If you have already logged in before, the button will say ‘Continue course’, and will take you back to the last place you left off in your course. Click on this button to continue your course.
• Overview – gives you an overview of your course
• Contents – shows you the different modules that are in your course.
• Talk – these are the talk channels (online forums) for your course which includes announcements, general forums, assessment forums and library support
• Assessments – where you find out the information on your assignments and where you upload your completed assignments
• Progress – for information on your overall progress in the course
The Contents tab will show you the individual modules in your course. You can click on this tab to go backwards and forwards in the course content.
Clicking on each module will then show you the course content in each module, which you can then click on to access.
You can navigate back to the course menu at any time by clicking on the ‘menu’ icon on the left hand side of your course page.
This will then open up the course menu where you can access the home page for your course, the assessment tab, your online study notes, and the different modules for your course.
You can search for something in your course page by clicking on the ‘search’ icon on the left hand side of your course page.
When there are new announcements or discussions in the talk channels, or if your marked assignment has been uploaded, you will see a new notification appear – click on the bell image to access the new messages.
If you click on the icon on the top right of your course page with your initials on it, a drop down menu will appear which gives you the following options:
Dashboard - Return to the dashboard, where your course is listed.
Home - Go to My Open Polytechnic, where you can access your final assessment results, apply for an assessment extension, access your Office 365 and student email account as well as study support.
Profile - Visit your account page to change your picture. By default your initials will display until you upload a picture. You can also opt in to receive text and email assignment alerts.
Logout - This is your logout button. This will log you out of the learning environment but you will still be logged into My Open Polytechnic.
You can find out about your assignments and upload them by going to the ‘Assessments’ page. There are a number of ways to get to the Assessments page.
1. You can click on the ‘Assessments’ tab on your course home page.
2. If you are already in a course module, you can navigate back to the main menu page by clicking the menu tab on the top left hand side of the course page
This will open up the menu page, and you can click on ‘Assessment’
To navigate to the ‘Assessment’ page, see ‘How do I find out about my assignments and submit them online?’
Once on the ‘Assessment’ page you will see links to your assignments. Click on the relevant link to find out what is required of you in your assignment and where to upload it.
The assignment page will list the information you need to complete the assignment.
To submit your assignment to Open Polytechnic, click on the ‘Add file’ button. This will take you to a page where you can choose where you upload your assignment file from (i.e. from your computer or wherever you have it stored electronically)
Once your file is uploaded it will appear under the ‘Uploaded file’ section. This confirms your file is uploaded, but not yet submitted.
If you wish to change your file before submitting, click on the remove ‘x’ button and then upload your new file.
When you are ready to submit your assignment click on the ‘Submit assessment’ button. The assignment will then be submitted for marking.
When an assignment is marked and returned, you will see a notification appear on your course page (example of how this looks below). By clicking on the notification you will be taken to the announcements page where you will be to click on the message about your marked assignment.
You can also opt in to receive notifications at your student email address (email@example.com).
Yes, once you opt in to receive SMS messages you will then receive a text message notification when your assessment has been submitted/marked and returned.
To opt in for SMS message notifications:
1. Log in to your online course.
2.Click on the icon (with your initials or your avatar) in the top right hand corner, and click on ‘Profile’.
3. On the right side, there is a ‘Contact’ box for you to fill in the mobile number you would like the notification to be sent to.
4. Click the tick box to opt in for SMS message notifications .
5. If it is your first time opting in for SMS messages you will need to verify your phone number. Click on ‘Verify now’ .
6. A ‘verify your phone’ box will pop up. Click on ‘Get code’. A code will be sent to your mobile.
7. Enter the code and click ‘Verify’.
8. Once your phone is verified, scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘Update account’.
9. You will not be sent an alert informing you of the changes it will just automatically change your information once you click ‘Update account’.
Yes, you can, but first you will need to opt in to receive email notifications.To opt in for email notifications:1. Log in to your online course.
2.Click on the icon (with your initials or your avatar) in the top right hand corner, and click on 'Profile'
4.Click the tick box to opt in for email notifications.
5.Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update Account.

My Open Polytechnic is your online student portal where you can access:
Qualifications & courses – check assessment due dates and course results on your My Open Polytechnic homepage, or click through to see all of your qualification and course information including your final results.
My courses in Online Campus – go direct to your course page in Online Campus, our online learning environment.
Office 365 ProPlus – this gives you access to online versions of Microsoft software. You can also download the Microsoft software to your computer for free.

Scroll down the page until you see the ‘Launch Office 365 ProPlus.’ Follow the prompts to set up your account. Please note, if you are not sure what your Open Polytechnic student email address is, this is displayed in My Open Polytechnic above the button to launch Office 365 ProPlus.

You can get to Office 365 ProPlus through My Open Polytechnic. It gives you access to online versions of Microsoft software, including:
You can also create, edit and save your assignments to OneDrive, which has unlimited free online storage space. Never lose an assignment again if the unthinkable happens and your computer dies.
Office 365 ProPlus also lets you download the latest version of Microsoft Office to your computer. You get five licences to download additional copies of the software onto any Windows or Mac PC you want.
If you download the Microsoft apps from the Apple App Store or Google Play store, you will also be able to access all of the files that you saved to your Sky Drive account from your phone or tablet.
