The Open Polytechnic’s Neil Ballantyne has led the development of an open access version of Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work (the journal of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers).

The journal is now one of a number of open access journals hosted as part of the University of Otago’s OUR journal service. As a founder member of the journal's editorial collective Neil negotiated the hosting agreement with the University of Otago and co-edited the first open access issue with Simon Lowe of the University of Waikato.

Neil, a Senior Lecturer in Social Work in the School of Health & Social Sciences said that “By taking this step the journal is contributing to a worldwide open access movement and to the foundation of an intellectual commons where the fruits of academic labour are available to all. Our open access platform will also extend the international readership of the journal, increasing the likelihood that authors will have their work read and cited.”
