Continuing the introduction to the Humanities and Arts, the course can be credited towards a Bachelor of Arts major in Humanities. Exploring the theme of cultural encounters, the course focuses on the ways in which cultures interact, overlap, and are transformed by cultural encounters. It considers cultural records including artworks, medical texts, and architectural features. It also studies the expression of ideas and concepts, including the social construction of identities.
You will study history, art history, ethics, philosophy, literature, history of medicine, classics, archaeology and religious studies. Examples include Western approaches to African art, philosophical discussions about liberalism and freedom, and how the modern short story and ancient Greek drama deal with different cultural experiences and encounters. Examples are from a range of cultures, including New Zealand.
Based on a course from the Open University UK, supplementary material feature New Zealand examples.
This course is not available to international students.
