Students with disabilities

Open and distance learning is ideal for people who may have difficulty attending a full-time contact institution due to a physical disability, health condition, mental illness or specific learning need.

With Open Polytechnic you don’t have to worry about travelling or getting around a campus. We offer a much more accessible system than traditional forms of study because of our specialised teaching methods combined with a wide range of multimedia materials and study support.

Because you’re studying at the times you choose you can vary your study hours to compensate for good days and bad days.

The Learning Centre can support and advise you in all matters related to your studies. We offer the following services:

  • Individual consultations by phone or email
  • Assessment of your study situation and the support you might need for your studies
  • Ongoing support throughout your studies
  • Course materials in accessible formats: PDF, Word, audio and enlarged print
  • Online workshops on study strategies and exam preparation
  • Online learning resources
  • Information about external organisations and government agencies.

The Open Polytechnic can also help with examinations by providing:

  • Examination material in an alternative format such as large print
  • A reader/writer
  • Special furniture
  • The ability to sit an examination at home
  • Extra time and/or rest breaks.
