Student loans

Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. If you are enrolling in a trimester based course make sure you apply for a student loan at least 4 weeks before the trimester starts. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid.

Recently StudyLink made changes to student loan eligibility. We have summarised the key changes below however for more detailed information visit StudyLink.

Open courses

When you enrol in an open course with Open Polytechnic you will have a study period of up to 32 weeks to complete your study (you can choose to complete your course quicker than this if you wish).

Your StudyLink student loan contract will be valid for 52 weeks (one year). For each loan contract you must pay a StudyLink administration fee. To re-enrol without having to take out a new loan contract (and pay a new administration fee) you need to re-enrol with us within the first 20 weeks of your study so that any new courses fit within the 52 week period.

If you are studying an open course part-time (less than 100 credits per 52 week StudyLink contract period) then your fees may be paid by student loan. However from 1 January 2012 you will not be eligible to borrow course related costs to cover additional study expenses such as textbooks or workshops.

Trimester courses

If you are studying part-time (less than three courses/60 credits over one trimester or five courses/100 credits over two trimesters) then your fees may be paid by student loan, however from 1 January 2012 you will not be eligible to borrow course related costs to cover additional study expenses such as textbooks or workshops.

If you are studying full-time (a minimum of three courses/60 credits over one trimester or five courses/100 credits over two trimesters) then your fees can be paid by student loan. You will also be eligible to borrow course related costs to cover any textbook or workshop expenses for each course.

55 years and over

If you are 55 years of age or over you may be able to pay your fees with a student loan. However from 1 January 2013 new students aged 55 or over will not be eligible to borrow course related costs to cover additional study expenses such as textbooks or workshops.
