Banking and Finance

If you are considering a career, or currently working in the banking and finance sector, the New Zealand Diploma in Business programme meets the education requirements for Associate Membership of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia) – AFin.

Programme structure

There are two routes to achieving AFin membership.

  1. The AFin post nominal will be granted to students who successfully complete the Open Polytechnic Diploma in Banking, which comprises the following six  compulsory courses from the New Zealand Diploma in Business programme:

      Six compulsory courses
      400 Accounting Principles 
      570 Introduction to Banking and Financial Services 
      670 Advanced Banking
      675 Lending and Securities 
      676 International Trade and Finance
      696 Investment and Insurance

  1. The AFin post nominal will also be granted to students who successfully complete the New Zealand Diploma in Business programme without studying specific banking papers.  Whichever route you choose, you need to be a member of Finsia to obtain the AFin post nominal.  You must also be working in the financial services industry, or in a finance related role.

Entry requirements

For general entry into the The Open Polytechnic Diploma in Banking or the New Zealand Diploma in Business:
Under 20 years

  • Must have 6th Form Certificate with aggregate of best 4 to total no more than 20 OR
  • May have a Sixth Form Certificate with such grades as the Academic Registrar deems equivalent to the above OR
  • May have Level 2 unit standards as the Academic Registrar deems equivalent to the above.

NCEA entry requirements:

  • 4 credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Reading
  • 4 credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Writing PLUS
  • 48 credits at Level 2 with no fewer than 12 credits in each of four subjects.

Over 20 years
Open entry, although students without Sixth Form Certificate level qualifications may be required to show that they have relevant work experience.
