7473 Manufacturing Jewellery Stage 3

About the course

This course develops and builds on the first two Manufacturing Jewellery theory courses. This course requires students to develop their own jewellery designs to a standard expected in the New Zealand jewellery industry.

Successful completion of this course and courses 7471 & 7472 entitles students to be awarded the Open Polytechnic Certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery Level 3.

    7. Stone setting
    8. Engraving

    10. Shaping metals
    11. Making joints
    12. Making models for casting
    13. Methods of casting
    14. Finishing processes
    15. Repairing and altering jewellery

What students learn

On completing the course, students should be able to:

    1. Develop and present jewellery designs that have the potential to be made into jewellery.
    2. Select, test and use metals suitable for making jewellery.
    3. Explain how to select and handle gemstones when constructing and repairing jewellery.
    4. Explain how to grade diamonds by clarity and colour, how to test diamonds and simulants, and identify diamonds and their simulants from test results.
    5. Describe the procedure for finishing jewellery by electroplating.
    6. Describe methods of setting stones, using a variety of appropriate methods.
    7. Explain how to prepare engraving tools and engrave metals used in jewellery manufacturing.
    8. Describe appropriate methods of shaping metals for jewellery manufacture and construction.
    9. Explain how to choose suitable materials and methods for making a range of joints.
    10. Explain the principles for making master patterns for casting, the methods of casting and the methods of finishing cast metals for constructing jewellery.
    11. Describe how to inspect and clean jewellery for repair, recognise repair problems and suggest appropriate repairs or alterations.

Prerequisite

Successful completion of course 7472 Manufacturing Jewellery Stage 2 (Design).
 

Assessment

In-course work: There is a theory assessment at the end of each module and these assessments are completed and returned by post or on-line to your tutor for marking once the study of a module is complete.

All assessments need to be completed before the examination, as the examination date coincides with the end of the enrolment for this course.

Exam: Successful completion of the theory assessments enables students to sit a final examination in November.

Enrolment

To ensure students are enrolled and prepared for the examination enrolment is accepted into this course between 15-November and 15-April, with the finish date of November the same year. These dates provide students sufficient time to enrol, complete all assessments and prepare for the examination.
