7471 Manufacturing Jewellery Stage 1

About the course

This course introduces the basic theory knowledge of Manufacturing Jewellery.

It is a great course to study while you are looking for employment in the Manufacturing Jewellery industry or for students already employed as Manufacturing Jewellery apprentices. It would also be very useful for people working in a retail environment wanting a basic knoweldge of Jewellery.

Successful completion of the course entitles students to be awarded The Open Polytechnic Certificate of Achievement in Manufacturing Jewellery.

    10. Gemstone characteristics
    11. Gemstones
    12. Identifying gemstones
    13. Using coloured finishes
    14. Diamonds and their cuts

What students learn

On completing the course, students should be able to:

    1. Identify typical equipment used in the jewellery workshop and describe storage and safety procedures.
    2. Explain how to select an appropriate tool for a given task, use these and store these tools in a manner that maintains their integrity.
    3. Describe the properties of metals and alloys commonly used in jewellery and the processes for alloying gold and silver.
    4. Describe and demonstrate appropriate methods of cleaning, finishing and repairing jewellery.
    5. Describe the chemical composition and characteristics of gemstones and appropriate testing methods for gemstones and identify them from the test results.
    6. Describe appropriate colouring techniques and carry out chemical colouring and lacquering of metals.
    7. Describe the diamond cutting process and the different types of cuts.

Prerequisites

To gain entry to course 7471 students must have:

Eight credits at level 2 in NZQA domains of reading & writing or NCEA equivalent, or
Successfully completed any level 2 Certificate or equivalent.

Exception: Entry requirements 7471 will not apply if the Academic Registrar of the Polytechnic is satisfied that the person is capable of undertaking 7471 by reason of the student's educational qualifications or documented work or life experiences.

Assessment

In-course work 100%. There is a theory assessment at the end of each module and these assessments are completed and returned by post or on-line to your tutor for marking once the study of a module is complete.
