74342 Research Paper

About the course

This course (or the alternative, 74347 Practicum) is compulsory for students completing a Bachelor of Arts degree and it is an elective option within the Bachelor of Applied Science. In it, students research a topic of their own choice, in an area relevant to their major subject. They then communicate their research findings in an academic essay or report.

What's in the course

The course materials guide students through the research process. Through readings and notes, students are given information on research methodology, literature searching, annotated bibliographies, essay and report structuring, and so forth.

The course materials are aimed at enhancing students' research skills. They do not, therefore, include subject specific material. Students are required to do their own research to find the material relevant to their chosen topic. The Open Polytechnic library is available to assist in the research process.

What students learn

This course advances students' skills in research and writing, and allows students to develop specialist, in-depth knowledge of a subject in which they have special interest. It also introduces students to the experience of working with an academic supervisor, and incorporating academic peer review into their work.

Prerequisite

In general, this course will be the last one for which students enrol in their degree or diploma. This expectation may be waived, but in no case will a student be admitted to the course unless he or she has completed at least 60-credits at Level 6.

Restrictions

Completing this course in one trimester requires students to work efficiently. If you are intending to enrol in this course, you must therefore discuss your intentions with a potential academic supervisor before you enrol. In addition, you must obtain the approval of the Course Leader before your enrolment will be accepted. For further information please contact the Course Leader.
