74112 Introduction to the Social Sciences 1: Politics, Identity and Difference
About the course
This 20 credit course is taught over 17 weeks. This is an interdisciplinary course which provides students a lively and wide-ranging introduction to the Social Sciences. It is the first of two courses that explore the key debates, ideas and arguments in the social sciences today.
In Politics, Identity and Difference, students are asked to examine social change, focussing on the question of whether societies have become more unstable, fragmented and uncertain following the Second World War. A significant focus of this course is the question of structure and agency. This theme investigates explanation of people's behaviours within the context of social processes and social institutions. What constraints and pressures, for instance, circumscribe our knowledge and freedom?
Based on an Open University, United Kingdom course, 74112 is supplemented by discussions and examples of New Zealand contexts.
