This course explores issues of social structure, culture and change in contemporary New Zealand society. This 20 credit course is taught over 17 weeks.

- Introducing the social sciences - social scientific thinking; and key issues: identity, globalisation and inequality
- Conceptual tools in the social sciences - conceptual building blocks: class, gender and ethnicity
- Cultural studies - representation, ideology, identity and power
- Changing social formations - changes in the New Zealand social structure.

Students will be able to
- Outline and explain core social scientific concepts
- Critically apply social scientific concepts - class, gender, ethnicity, representation, power and identity - to the New Zealand context
- Analyse issues of social, historical and cultural change in post-war New Zealand society.
